Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring content so AI assistants and answer engines can extract, trust, and cite it — using direct question-led headings, self-contained answers, structured data, and consistent entity information across the web.

The shift in what winning looks like

For twenty years the goal was a position. Now a growing share of queries end with an answer composed by a machine, with two or three sources credited beneath it. Being ranked fourth on a page nobody scrolls is worth less than being the passage that gets quoted.

Answer engine optimisation is the discipline of making your content the thing that gets quoted.

How answer engines choose what to quote

Simplifying a complex process into what practitioners can act on, engines look for passages that are:

  • Directly responsive. They answer the exact question asked.
  • Self-contained. They make sense lifted out of the page, with no dependency on the previous three paragraphs.
  • Attributable. The source is identifiable, and the entity behind it is recognisable.
  • Consistent with the rest of the web. Claims that contradict everything else get filtered as risk.
  • Structurally clean. Clear headings, lists, and markup make extraction cheap.

Everything below follows from those five properties.

Write the answer first, then the explanation

The single most effective change: under each heading, answer in the first two sentences, then elaborate.

Weak: three paragraphs of context, then the answer buried in the middle of the fourth.

Strong: "A growth systems studio owns the entire path from ad to closed customer. Unlike a single-service agency, it is measured on qualified pipeline rather than channel metrics." Then the context, examples, and caveats.

Journalists call this burying the lede. Answer engines simply skip it.

Use questions as headings

Real questions, phrased the way people ask them, make good headings for extractable content: "How much does a website cost in India?", "When should a business move to a CRM?", "Why do Meta ads stop working?"

Under each, keep the answer tight and complete. If a heading needs six hundred words to answer, it is probably two questions.

Make passages self-contained

Assume the reader arrives at this heading with no prior context. Avoid "as mentioned above", "this approach", and pronouns pointing to earlier sections. Name the subject again. Repetition that reads slightly redundant to a human is what makes a passage quotable to a machine.

Add structured data that matches the content

Use schema markup that reflects what is actually on the page:

  • FAQPage for genuine question and answer blocks.
  • Article or BlogPosting with author, publisher, and dates.
  • Organization and LocalBusiness for the entity behind the content.
  • HowTo for genuine step sequences.
  • Breadcrumbs for context.

Markup that misrepresents the page is worse than no markup. The point is machine legibility, not decoration.

Establish the entity, not just the page

Answer engines cite sources they can identify. That means your business needs to be a resolvable entity:

  • Identical name, address, and phone number everywhere it appears.
  • A clear about page stating what the business is, where it operates, and who runs it.
  • Consistent descriptions across your site, social profiles, directories, and any press.
  • Author identity on content, with credentials that explain why this source knows.
  • Corroborating mentions on sites you do not control.

An engine deciding whether to quote you is, in effect, asking whether you exist coherently.

Publish the specifics competitors avoid

Generic content cannot be cited usefully because it says nothing extractable. Specifics get quoted:

  • Real price ranges, with conditions.
  • Timelines with the factors that change them.
  • Local requirements, regulations, and constraints.
  • Comparison tables between real options.
  • Process steps with what typically goes wrong at each.

Publishing specifics is commercially uncomfortable and structurally advantageous. Most competitors will not do it.

Keep content current and dated

Engines weigh freshness for anything time-sensitive. Show a published date and a genuine updated date, and actually update. Stale content with a refreshed timestamp is a short-lived trick and a long-term credibility cost.

Make the machine's job easy technically

  • Server-render important content. If a passage only exists after JavaScript executes, extraction is unreliable.
  • Keep an accurate sitemap.
  • Allow AI crawlers explicitly in robots.txt if you want citations.
  • Publish an llms.txt summary of what your site is and what it covers.
  • Avoid hiding key content behind tabs, accordions, or pop-ups.

Measuring AEO without direct rank data

There is no clean ranking report for AI answers yet. Practical proxies:

  • Ask the major assistants the questions you target, monthly, and record whether you are cited.
  • Watch referral traffic from AI assistants in analytics.
  • Track branded search volume, which tends to rise when you are being mentioned in answers.
  • Monitor whether your key pages are being crawled by AI user agents in server logs.

The honest summary

AEO is not a trick layer on top of SEO. It is what good technical publishing looks like when the reader is a machine deciding whether to vouch for you: answer directly, be specific, be consistent, be identifiable, and make extraction easy.

Businesses that were already writing genuinely useful, specific content mostly need structural changes. Businesses publishing vague filler need a different content strategy entirely.

Key takeaways

  • Answer the question in the first two sentences under the heading, not in paragraph six.
  • Self-contained passages get quoted; passages that depend on earlier context do not.
  • Entity consistency across the web decides whether an engine trusts you enough to cite you.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimisation?

It is optimising content so answer engines and AI assistants can extract a direct answer from it and cite the source, rather than only ranking a page in a list of blue links.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO optimises for position in a results list. AEO optimises for being the passage an engine quotes. The overlap is large, but AEO puts far more weight on structure, directness, and extractability.

Does schema markup help with AI citations?

It helps machines resolve what your page is about and who published it, which supports citation decisions. It is a supporting signal rather than a guarantee.
