The search bar is no longer one box
A meaningful share of people looking for a restaurant, a service, or a product now type into Instagram, YouTube, or a marketplace rather than a search engine. Younger buyers do it habitually. Professional buyers do it on LinkedIn and industry forums.
Each of those search bars runs its own index with its own signals. Being invisible inside them is a discovery gap that no amount of web SEO fixes.
Universal principles
Across platforms, four things consistently help:
- Use the words people actually type. Category, city, occasion, problem. Clever titles are invisible to search.
- Put keywords where the platform reads them: profile name, bio, captions, on-screen text, spoken audio, file names, alt text.
- Serve the query completely within the platform. Content that sends people away immediately performs worse in platform search.
- Consistency of topic. Accounts that cover one clear domain get surfaced more reliably than accounts that post about everything.
- Profile name field is searchable. "OTL | Growth Systems Studio Ahmedabad" is findable; "OTL" alone is not.
- Bio should state category and location plainly.
- Captions carry weight — write the first line as the searchable statement, not a teaser.
- On-screen text in reels is read and matters for both search and accessibility.
- Spoken words are transcribed; say the topic aloud.
- Alt text on posts is available and underused.
- Hashtags matter less than they did; treat them as a minor categorisation signal rather than a strategy.
- Saves and shares signal usefulness more strongly than likes.
YouTube
The second largest search engine, and the most explicitly search-driven social platform.
- Title should match search phrasing closely.
- Say the topic clearly in the first fifteen seconds; the transcript is indexed.
- Write a description that genuinely describes, with the key phrase early.
- Chapters help both viewers and indexing.
- Thumbnails drive click-through, which drives ranking.
- Retention is dominant: a video that holds attention outranks a better-optimised one that does not.
- Headline and about section are searchable fields; write them for the search a buyer would run.
- Company page description should state services and locations plainly.
- Posts surface in search and in feed based on topic consistency and engagement quality.
- Employee profiles collectively determine how findable the business is.
Reddit and forums
- Increasingly cited by AI answer engines, which makes forum presence unusually valuable.
- Participate genuinely, answer questions in your domain, and disclose affiliation.
- Promotional posting is removed and damages the account.
- Well-written answers to recurring questions have long lifespans and are frequently surfaced later.
Marketplaces and platform-specific search
For product businesses, marketplace search is where the money is. Titles, attributes, category selection, image quality, review volume, and answered questions all function as ranking signals.
For service businesses, the equivalent is category directories and maps — where completeness of profile data is the primary lever.
What to change first
- Rewrite every profile name and bio to include category plus location.
- Say the topic aloud within the first seconds of every video.
- Write first lines of captions as plain, searchable statements.
- Add on-screen text to short video, both for accessibility and indexing.
- Answer real questions in your domain, in the words people used to ask them.
Do not cross-post identically
The same asset performs differently by platform because each index rewards different behaviour. Adapt: different first lines, different aspect ratios, different length, different call to action.
Automated identical cross-posting is efficient and consistently underperforms.
Measurement
Platform analytics usually show how much reach came from search or from non-follower discovery. Watch that share over time; it is the closest available proxy for search performance.
Also track: profile visits, saves, and direct messages that begin with a question — those are search-driven behaviours, and they convert better than passive feed engagement.
The strategic point
Search everywhere optimisation is not a new discipline so much as an acknowledgement that discovery has fragmented. The businesses that adapt are simply the ones that stopped assuming a single search box exists.
