The short answer
Judge the work, not the pitch. Open sites they have built on your phone, and get clear answers on ownership, year-two costs and where your enquiries will go before you pay.
Seven questions to ask
- Can I see live sites you built? Open them on mobile data. Do they load fast?
- Whose name is the domain registered in? It should be yours.
- What does year two cost? Domain, hosting and maintenance renewals.
- Is it custom-built or a page-builder theme? Both can work; you should know which.
- Where do enquiries go, and how will I be told about each one?
- What happens when I need a change? How fast, and at what cost?
- Can I see a preview of my site before I pay in full?
Red flags
- A price far below everyone else with no clear list of what is included.
- The domain registered in the agency's name.
- No working examples, only screenshots.
